The Major Arcana

The Major Arcana are the 22 cards numbered 0 through 21, from The Fool to The World. They cover the big, archetypal themes of a life — love, death, change, power, awakening — rather than the day-to-day detail the 56 Minor Arcana cards handle. When several Major Arcana cards show up in one spread, many readers take that as a sign the situation carries more weight than an ordinary day.

Read in order, the 22 cards are often described as one continuous arc — sometimes called "The Fool's Journey" — from innocence and a first step (The Fool) through struggle, insight, and upheaval, to integration and completion (The World). That framing is a common teaching device, not a rule for reading: in an actual spread, a Major Arcana card describes the position it lands in, not a fixed stop on someone's life story.
