The Hermit Tarot Card Meaning

What the card shows
A lone figure on a mountain, lantern held out just far enough to see the next step. Upright, the Hermit is deliberate withdrawal.
Upright meaning
Stepping back from noise to find an answer only solitude can give you.
If it's your card today
A day better spent alone with a question than crowd-sourcing the answer.
Commentary and alternative readings by context
Love and relationships
In love, The Hermit can suggest needing space or time alone before a relationship decision, or a period of being single that serves a real purpose.
Work and decisions
For career, it points to independent work, research, or stepping back from a team to think clearly before the next move.
As a person
The Hermit fits a reflective person who steps away from noise to find their own answer and often offers thoughtful guidance. Solitude restores them; they should signal when quiet has become isolation.
Reversed meaning
Isolation that has gone on too long, or avoidance of a needed pause.
Where Tarot schools disagree
The main interpretation follows Rider–Waite–Smith. The Marseille and Thoth comparisons are attributed to named authors and works.
The Hermit Tarot Card: Tarot de Marseille Interpretation
Tarot de Marseille — L’Hermite (Paul Marteau, 1949)
In Paul Marteau's named system in Le Tarot de Marseille (1949), L’Hermite represents a patient search for truth through logic, prudence, and partly veiled light. This is a specific twentieth-century interpretation, not an ancient meaning shared by every Marseille reader.
The Hermit Tarot Card: Crowley’s Interpretation in The Book of Thoth (1944)
Thoth — The Hermit, Atu IX (Aleister Crowley, 1944)
Crowley's exact corresponding card in The Book of Thoth (1944) is The Hermit, Atu IX. Crowley kept the Hebrew letter Yod and the sign Virgo. His own commentary emphasizes Yod as the seed-letter of the whole alphabet — the Hermit's light read as a creative, generative spark rather than only a search, giving the withdrawal a more actively fertile cast than either Marseille or RWS's quieter solitude.
Why the interpretations differ
Rider–Waite–Smith, Paul Marteau’s Marseille method and Crowley’s Thoth use different symbolic grammars. They may point to the same broad theme, but they reach it through different images, arcana order, correspondences and authorial systems. The differences above are therefore differences of method, not competing claims about one fixed universal meaning.
