Commentary and alternative readings by context
Love and relationships
In love, it points to real grief over a loss or disappointment — while also gently noting that not everything in the relationship or your life was lost.
Work and decisions
For career, it suggests dwelling on a setback longer than is useful, when there is still something worth building on.
As a person
The Five of Cups can represent someone who feels loss honestly rather than pretending to be fine. They notice what went wrong, yet healing asks them to make room for the support and possibilities still present.
Reversed meaning
Starting to turn around and see what’s still there, or acceptance finally arriving.
Where Tarot schools disagree
The main interpretation follows Rider–Waite–Smith. The Marseille and Thoth comparisons are attributed to named authors and works.
Five of Cups Tarot Card: Tarot de Marseille Interpretation
Tarot de Marseille — Cinq de Coupes (Paul Marteau, 1949)
In Paul Marteau's number-and-suit method in Le Tarot de Marseille (1949), this rank means transition from one plane to another, with energy becoming multiple and diffuse. Cups describe receptive feeling, from spiritual love to human affection. Read together, the card applies that stage to this suit's domain. This is Marteau's specific twentieth-century system.
Five of Cups Tarot Card: Crowley’s Interpretation in The Book of Thoth (1944)
Thoth — Five of Cups — Disappointment (Aleister Crowley, 1944)
Crowley's exact corresponding card in The Book of Thoth (1944) is Five of Cups — Disappointment. The decan title, "Disappointment," ruled by Mars in Scorpio (Mars in its own sign, the most intensely emotional-and-aggressive placement in the deck), tracks almost exactly with RWS's grief-over-spilled-cups imagery — one of the strongest independent matches between the astrological and pictorial traditions in the entire Minor Arcana.
Why the interpretations differ
RWS builds much of the reading from Pamela Colman Smith’s narrative scene. Marseille numbered minors are usually read through number, suit and composition, while Thoth adds a printed title and astrological or decan structure. The systems can begin with the same number and suit yet emphasize different dynamics.
