Crowley's exact corresponding card in The Book of Thoth (1944) is Ten of Wands — Oppression. The decan is bluntly named "Oppression," ruled by Saturn in Sagittarius — restriction (Saturn) crushing down on a sign built for open movement (Sagittarius). This is one of the closest matches to RWS in the whole Wands suit: a burden that has become genuinely too heavy, arrived at independently through astrology rather than pictorial symbolism.
Why the interpretations differ
RWS builds much of the reading from Pamela Colman Smith’s narrative scene.
